Building Character Resumes

I have spent the last 2 weeks working on characters and their backgrounds.I am working hard and the story is moving in leaps and bounds. This is different from original approach.I have my story now,but it is up to the characters to bring it to life.

Hitting a milestone this week.....

I have read 2500 books. The number seems so small but when I look at my ledger the pages flow with book titles of all genres.I started keeping a ledger when I turned 21.I just finished Stephen King's "On Writing" which seems appropriate.Mr. King is a big advocate on reading as well as writing.Just guessing I have read 15 other books of his and own a few of them in my personal library.I have a goal to read the entire Stephen King collection before I die and I am off to a good start.

Still working on character build-ups and will be introducing more soon.Enjoyed Birmingham this week.....there are alot of cozy places there for a writer to sit and create.

Back to the books....

Introducing The Headmaster

The protagonist as part of the story will be joining a private school near his new home. The Headmaster of the school is quite a character.Known for being an outspoken man of keen intellect and a staunch defender of the First Amendment,Headmaster Paul will be "the moral lighthouse"for our dark and troubled young protagonist. The Headmaster considers himself quite the poet and has the reputation for reciting his latest work at any given time and place. The faculty and most of the students do admire and respect him but the poems have a tendency to set alot of eyes rolling. Here's one for you to indulge yourself with:

She is a Mere Figment of the Poet's Fancy

Her lips are like a lovely song that ripples as it flows

Her lips are twilight water

Her mouth is as sweet as a ripe fig

Her neck is like a stately tower

Her stockinged feet hold me in wonder

Her sweetness halting like sunny day

Her voice cuts like a knife

Her voice also is rich and vibrant like a cello

And I consider myself a lucky fellow

Please hold all applause until the end of the book..........

For those interested I am using pieces from the book:"Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases" by Greenville Kleiser

The Quest for Convincing Characters

Creating rich, complex, multidimensional characters takes some time.I have my main protagonist,a group of antagonists, and many supporting characters that are going to enrich my story along the way .Some writers argue plot first but I say a story rich with unique characters can make just about any story a great story.I have spent a great amount of time on my characters and their individual quirks and their own seperate philosophies. The main protagonist has been in my head for a number of years but only came alive last year as I was working on another story. This character was the missing link to solving problems that were going to be coming up .He is the kind of person everybody has at one time or another wished they knew or had a friend like him.I call him a" 20th century New-Age Entrepreneur"....and his character is diverse enough that he can become the antagonist in yet another story if it comes along.....My characters are coming alive on the pages and it is very exciting to see them evolve. It is almost as if their lives are running parallel to mine.

One character in particular will have his own story come in print soon following the finish of this book.He will play a nominal role in this story but not hog up the spotlight.I am learning that he can enrich the story without giving away alot to the readers. It will be a very busy story at a a busy pace and each character will play a very important role to the development of the story.I am learning to let the characters grow on their own and not interfere with their development. They each have their own behaviors, core values, and own ways they will interact with each other.

I will be introducing some of the characters soon. For now,I am enjoying watching the characters writing themselves.........
